Critical Illness Benefit:
You may well survive a life-threatening illness, but will your finances?

Although the odds of surviving a critical illness are better than ever thanks to medical advances, the odds of your contracting one are still high.

In fact, according to the statistics, cancer, stroke and heart attack are the three most common critical illnesses, occurring across all ages in Canada. And while few people are prepared to face such a diagnosis, even fewer are prepared for the financial challenges of surviving a critical illness. As a result, many people are forced to use up their savings, deplete their retirement nest egg or even mortgage their home to fund their recovery.

Fortunately, if you’re under age 60, you and your spouse have the option to add either $10,000 or $20,000 (depending on the amount of your Term Life Insurance plan coverage) in Critical Illness Benefits to your existing protection.

The covered critical illnesses are life-threatening cancer, heart attack and stroke. The lump sum benefit will be paid directly to you, to spend as you wish, following 30 days’ (90 days for cancer) survival after the first diagnosis.

You can use the money however you wish:
  • To avoid withdrawing money from your RRSP or other savings
  • To pay for alternative and/or the latest medical treatment
  • To replace lost income so you can remain in your home
  • To adapt your vehicle or home if need be
  • To cover private nursing care or medical equipment
  • To spend time with family – perhaps even take a vacation
  • To take time off work to fully recover
Best of all, instead of having to worry about money while you’re seriously ill, you’ll be able to focus on what’s really important – making a full and speedy recovery.
