Lifting techniques that can save your back
Whether you’re rearranging furniture or doing yard work, you’re bound to encounter a job that requires heavy lifting. If you don’t know how to lift properly, you can seriously injure your back.
Before you lift, size up the object. Is it reasonable for you to lift by yourself? What is the best way to grip it? Is your route free of obstacles once you’ve lifted it? If you have any doubts, ask for help before attempting to move the object on your own.
If you decide that it’s reasonable, using the following techniques can save your back:
- Make sure your feet are firmly planted shoulder width apart.
- Keep your back straight and bend at the knees and hips. Arching your back at any time greatly increases your risk of injury.
- Tighten your stomach muscles, then straighten your knees in a steady motion and lift with your legs. Never attempt sudden or jerky motions!
- Keep the object as close to your body as possible. Remember to keep your back straight and avoid twisting your body once you’ve lifted the object.
- Put the object down the same way you lifted it: firmly plant your feet, tighten your stomach and bend your hips and knees while keeping your back straight.
