Manulife Financial gives $25,000 to forest fire relief Funds donated to Canadian Red Cross KELOWNA, British Columbia (Oct. 15, 2003) - Manulife Financial has donated $25,000 to the BC Forest Fire Relief Fund to help victims recovering from fires that devastated areas in British Columbia and Alberta earlier this summer. “The forest fires that ravaged British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley have had a devastating impact on thousands of peoples’ lives,” said Bruce Gordon, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Manulife Financial Canadian Operations. “We felt compelled to assist with a donation earlier and are now announcing that we will increase our assistance to those in need.” Manulife donated $10,000 to the fund in August, followed by a $15,000 cheque presented today by David Down, Manulife Financial’s British Columbia Regional Marketing Consultant, based in Kelowna. “Manulife’s support is deeply appreciated by the Red Cross,” said Leslie Vryenhoek, spokesperson for the Canadian Red Cross in Kelowna. “This continuing support from Manulife Financial and other people throughout Canada means so much to the many people here struggling to rebuild their lives.” The Red Cross is assisting fire victims with housing, food, clean up, clothing, back-to-school and home repair needs. The organization recently launched a public campaign to raise funds to support recovery assistance in all B.C. communities ravaged by fire this season.
