Donald A. Guloien
Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer

Donald A. GuloienDonald A. Guloien, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer, Chairman and CEO of MFC Global Investment Management, is responsible for Manulife’s world-wide investment activities. In addition, he is responsible for Asian Insurance and wealth management operations. He is a member of Manulife Financial's Executive and Management Committees.

In September 2008, Manulife’s Board of Directors announced that effective May 2009 Mr. Guloien would become the next President and CEO of Manulife Financial.

The world-wide investment operations include management of the Company’s general fund assets, and funds managed for external (third party) clients – in total, in excess of C$250 billion. Assets under management include traditional fixed income and equities, as well as alternative assets such as real estate, timber, agriculture and oil & gas.

Asian Insurance and Wealth Management operations provide products in select markets across the region including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Macau.

Mr. Guloien became Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer in 2001, responsible for Manulife’s investment operations in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Hong Kong and Pacific Asia. After successfully integrating the company’s investment operations with those of John Hancock, he became Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer in 2004. In 2007, Mr. Guloien also assumed responsibility for the company’s Asian operations.

From 1994 to 2001, Mr. Guloien led Manulife’s Mergers and Acquisition/Business Development unit, first as Senior Vice President and then as Executive Vice President. During this period he led a number of key acquisitions, divestitures and strategic initiatives, including the merger of Manulife with North American Life Assurance Company, the sale of the U.K. business, Manulife’s transformational demutualization project (the conversion of the company from a mutual life insurance company to an investor-owned, publicly traded stock company) and Manulife’s entry into Japan.

Mr. Guloien joined Manulife in 1981 as a research analyst and quickly moved through several strategic and marketing roles in both the Canadian and U.S. Divisions. He became Vice President, US Individual Business in 1990, where he was responsible for the operations of the Company's individual insurance and annuity business in the United States.

Mr. Guloien is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization and sits on the Board of Elliott & Page Limited. He is a former board member of Seamark Asset Management, the Children’s Aid Society Foundation, ThinkFirst Foundation of Canada and LIMRA International. Mr. Guloien is actively involved with the University of Toronto where he is a member of the Campaign Cabinet for the Rotman School of Management, and a former member of the Governing Council, the Dean’s Advisory Committee for the School of Graduate Studies and Hart House Board of Stewards. He is a 1998 recipient of the Arbor Award for his contributions to the University.

Mr. Guloien holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto.
