Manulife Centre holds free seminar on successful learning for children with specific learning disabilities
Hong Kong – The Manulife Centre for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities will organize a free seminar for parents, teachers and members of the public on Saturday, November 16, 2002. The seminar will examine the important factors for successful learning to help children with learning difficulties to overcome the hurdles they face. Students who have participated in previous training activities organized by the Manulife Centre will share their learning experiences at the seminar.
“About 10 to 20 per cent of Hong Kong’s children suffer from learning disabilities to different extents, but parents and teachers may not recognize the problem and wrongly think of those children as lazy or poor learners,” said Dr. Alice Cheng Lai, Person-in-charge of Manulife Centre for Children with Specific Learning Disabilities at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
“Sound physical and psychological health, good communication and teaching methods, and support and encouragement from parents, teachers and peers, all play critical parts in the process of learning. For children with specific learning difficulties, the importance of these factors is even higher,” said Dr. Lai.
During the seminar, students who have participated in previous training activities organized by the Manulife Centre, as well as their parents and teachers, will share their personal experiences with participants to foster an understanding of learning difficulties and ways to overcome them in order to make learning enjoyable and successful.
Conducted in Cantonese, the seminar will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Room FJ301, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Interested parties should contact the Centre staff on 2766 6313 for further details and registration. All seats will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.
