Manulife sponsors Children’s Day at Jurong BirdPark in celebration of recent acquisition

Singapore – In celebration of its 100 per cent ownership status in Singapore, Manulife is embarking on a corporate giving programme to benefit children and Jurong BirdPark during the months of September and October.

This programme encompasses the sponsorship of the Manulife Balloon Maze at the Children’s Day Carnival at Suntec City, a free admission day for children at Jurong BirdPark, the adoption of Flamingo Lake at Jurong BirdPark, and a fund-raising activity in aid of The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund.

“As a global corporate citizen, we have always believed in the importance of giving back to the community,” said Brian Boisvenue, President and Chief Executive Officer for Singapore, Manulife Financial. “Our corporate giving programme extends around the globe, with active participation from our employees and representatives in Singapore and the remaining 14 countries and territories where we conduct business.”

In Singapore, more than 200 Manulife employees and representatives have volunteered to sell charity tickets from 27 September 2002 to the end of October 2002. All funds raised will be donated to The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund. Started two years ago, The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund makes available pocket money for children from low-income families. The aim is to ease the financial burden faced by parents when providing for their children’s education. It gives at least $1 a day to children who would not otherwise be able to buy food during recess or take public transport to school. The National Council of Social Service, which disburses the money, estimates that 6,400 children will need help from the fund this year.

“Through this project with The Straits Times Pocket Money Fund, we hope to provide a helping hand to the less fortunate children,” added Mr. Boisvenue.

As part of Manulife’s celebrations, it is also sponsoring the Manulife Balloon Maze at this year’s Children’s Day Carnival at Suntec City from 27 to 29 September 2002. This will be followed by a family day carnival at the Jurong BirdPark on 13 October where it will be a day of games and fun for the young and old.

“We thank the residents of Singapore for supporting Manulife over the years. Going forward, we will continue to make our contributions to the community and deliver high quality financial products that Manulife has become renowned for globally. With the many products in the marketplace today, selecting appropriate plans and instruments is not an easy task. At Manulife, we endeavour to help everyone through this 'maze of life,' to provide sound advice so that they can make sound decisions and achieve their financial goals,” said Mr. Boisvenue.

The company has seen tremendous growth in the past three years, with 83 per cent growth in agency size.
