Recipients of the 2002 Canada-Japan Business Awards
Tokyo — The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ) announced the recipients of its second annual Canada-Japan Business Awards at a special awards dinner at Marler House, the official residence of Canadian Ambassador Robert G. Wright, on November 1, 2002. The awards were established last year to recognize business excellence among companies and individuals involved in Canada-Japan business and trade.
Neil Moody, executive director of the CCCJ, notes, “Recipients of the Canada-Japan Business Awards are a reflection of Canada’s commitment to the Japanese market and show the success of Canadian expertise in a variety of fields. We congratulate all nominees and winners for their excellence.”
The CCCJ has been working to promote the interests of Canadian business in Japan and encourage the development of commerce between Canada and Japan since 1975. Our 280 members represent over 115 companies and organizations, including, businesspersons, entrepreneurs, government representatives and educators from Canada, Japan and other countries.

Corporate Excellence Award
Manulife Life Insurance Company
This Canada-based multinational made a splash in Japan in 1999 when it announced a joint venture with Daihyaku Life. Weathering some difficult domestic conditions, including the failure of its Japanese partner, Manulife has effectively and profitably streamlined, modernized and rationalized its operations in Japan. The company has also introduced new, innovative products to Japan and undertaken a major recruiting program for young professionals.
SME Business Excellence Award
Escalator Handrail Company (EHC Japan)
EHC Japan is a wholly owned subsidiary of Escalator Handrail Company, the world’s leading manufacturer of handrails for escalators and moving walks. The company recently introduced to Japan its innovative AdRail, a handrail that can accommodate advertising.
Best New Company Award
Miranda Asia K.K.
Miranda Technologies is a leading digital broadcast equipment manufacturer based in Canada. Miranda Asia, established in 1999, was able to quickly penetrate the Japanese (and Asian) market, enjoying more than 350 percent growth in the past three years and concluding contracts with major domestic broadcasters and technology solutions companies.
Individual Award for Outstanding Support of the Canadian Community in Japan
Anne Bergasse (Abinitio Design)
Ms. Bergasse has contributed significantly to the Canadian community in Japan and the CCCJ through her work as a graphic designer (including production of Chamber publications) and on the Board of Governors from 1992 to 1996.
Special Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Canada-Japan Trade Relationship
Tsutomu Iwasaki (T. Iwasaki & Associates)
Toronto-based Mr. Iwasaki has served as an economic and business consultant for both the private and public sectors in Canada and Japan, focusing on bilateral economic consulting in investment and trade for the manufacturing industry, and was a leading force behind the creation of the Canada-Japan Business Council. He has also contributed significantly to Japanese understanding of Canada through the publication of several books and periodicals.
