What if I change my mind after applying for coverage?
Once you receive your Policy or Certificate of Insurance, examine it carefully. If you are not completely satisfied, simply return it to Manulife Financial promptly and request that your coverage be cancelled. Your premiums will be refunded in full - no questions asked - for any new Term Life, Major Accident Protection, Critical Illness or Child Life & Accident coverage that you cancel within 30 days of receiving your Certificate or Policy, or for any new Disability Income Replacement, Business Overhead Expense, Health Care, Dental Care or Personal Accident Benefit coverage that you cancel within 10 days of receiving your Certificate or Policy.
When will my coverage begin under the Term Life, Major Accident Protection, Critical Illness Insurance or Child Life & Accident Insurance plans?
Your coverage will begin on the date the properly completed application and the first premium are received by Manulife Financial, and if on that date you are insurable in accordance with our underwriting rules. If you are approved, you will receive a Certificate specifying the coverage provided and outlining the main policy provisions. If you are not insurable, a full refund of the premiums will be made.
When will my coverage begin under the Health Care Plan, Dental Care Plan, Disability Income Replacement Plan, Business Overhead Expense Plan or Optional Personal Accident Benefit?
Your coverage will begin on the 1st of the month following approval of your application by Manulife Financial (so long as the premium is paid). If you are approved, you will receive a Policy or Certificate specifying the coverage provided and outlining the main provisions. If you are not insurable, a full refund of the premiums will be made.
What if I smoke occasionally?
You are only entitled to Non-Smoker rates for Engineers Canada Sponsored Term Life or Critical Illness coverage if, as of the date your application is received by Manulife Financial, you have not smoked any cigarettes in the past 12 months and you meet our health standards. If you are already covered and you begin smoking, you must notify us so that we can adjust your premiums accordingly.
What if I quit smoking after I am covered?
Congratulations! After a 12-month period during which you have not smoked cigarettes, notify us. Here is a Non-Smoker Application to complete and return to us. If it is approved, your lower Non-Smoker Term Life or Critical Illness rates will begin on the 1st of the month following our receipt of your Non-Smoker Application.
I have received my Premium Notice. What do I need to do?
If your payment method of choice is either by credit card or Pre-Authorized Collection (PAC), and the credit card or account number shown on your Premium Notice is correct, you don't need to do anything. We will charge your premium payment to your account in the month in which your premium is due, and apply it to your coverage. If your payment method is by cheque, send a cheque for the full amount to us by your Policy Anniversary Date.
How do I increase the amount of my coverage?
To apply for increased coverage, simply complete another application for the additional coverage amount, then send it to Manulife Financial. For your convenience, you can apply online for Term Life coverage, you can apply online for Major Accident Protection coverage with no health exams or medical questions to answer, or you can contact your authorized representative for help completing your application for the Health Care Plan, Dental Care Plan, Disability Income Replacement Plan or Business Overhead Expense Plan. If you prefer, you can download a printer-ready application for Term Life or Major Accident Protection coverage, or contact one of Manulife's experienced Customer Service Representatives and we'll send you an application form through the mail.
How do I change the way I pay my premiums?
You can change your payment method online. Or if you prefer, simply fill out the form on the back of your Premium Notice and mail it to us. We have made it easy for you to pay your premiums by cheque, credit card, or directly from your chequing account by Pre-Authorized Collection (PAC).
How do I update my mailing address, telephone number or e-mail address?
You can update your address, phone number or e-mail address online.
How do I change my beneficiary?
You can change the individual or institution you choose to receive your Engineers Canada Sponsored Term Life benefit, Major Accident Protection death benefit or Optional Personal Accident death benefit by completing and signing a Change of Beneficiary form and mailing it to Manulife Financial. If your current beneficiary is irrevocable or preferred, you will need your beneficiary's consent to make this change. In Quebec, a spouse designated as beneficiary is irrevocable unless otherwise stated.
How do I request an additional brochure and application?
You can request a printed brochure and application by contacting Manulife Financial toll-free at 1 877 598-2273 Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, or e-mail am_service@manulife.com any time.
Can I convert my Term Life coverage to an individual policy?
If you cancel your Engineers Canada sponsored Term Life Insurance you may, within 31 days, apply to convert your insurance to selected individual plans without an additional medical examination or extra health questions to answer. You simply pay the rates for the individual plan that apply to your age at the time of conversion. Contact us for more information.
How do I cancel my coverage?
To cancel your coverage, return your Certificate or Policy to us along with your written and signed cancellation request. Your premiums will be refunded in full - no questions asked - for any new Term Life, Major Accident Protection, Critical Illness or Child Life & Accident coverage that you cancel within 30 days of receiving your Certificate or Policy, or for any new Disability Income Replacement, Business Overhead Expense, Health Care, Dental Care or Personal Accident Benefit coverage that you cancel within 10 days of receiving your Certificate or Policy. Your coverage will end beginning with the payment due date following the date on which we receive your cancellation request. Please take note that if you later choose to rejoin the Plan, you must once again complete an application and meet the medical qualifications required of any new applicant. (However, if you terminate your Health Care Plan, Dental Care Plan, Disability Income Replacement Plan or Business Overhead Expense Plan coverage after two years to join an employer-sponsored group plan, you may be eligible to rejoin these Plans later and reinstate your original coverage, without providing proof of good health.) If you are unsure about cancelling your coverage, please contact us and we will try to help.

Your authorized insurance representative can discuss the Engineers Canada sponsored insurance products with you, answer your questions, provide you with the premium costs and assist you in determining what selection of coverage best suits your needs and those of your family. Your insurance representative will also assist you with your application for the Health Care Plan, the Dental Care Plan, the Disability Income Replacement Plan and the Business Overhead Expense Plan.
